home for the holidays

This is the first time in years that I've actually been home for Obon. And it's Arashi's first time experiencing it, too. When I told her about praying at the shrine for dead relatives, she insisted that we also go pray for the red wolf pup that passed away last month. Only girl in the litter, and she died from a perforation in her small intestine, the poor thing. So I suppose I'll be paying respects to her, too.

Also, anyone interested in seeing some of the more nocturnal animals actually awake and active, Ueno is holding a night safari. You can go through on your own or with a guide, and I'll be there for about three hours starting at 7pm. Feel free to stop by and come through the safari, and if you're really lucky, the wolves might just sing for you.

I will. I'm just working for a few hours. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with Arashi during those hours, though. I'm worried she's going to get bored and wander off or something. Not that she typically does it, but there's a first time for everything. Or so the saying goes, at least.

I would be glad to keep an eye on her. Perhaps she could show me around the zoo while we wait for you?

Are you sure? I mean I don't want to ruin your plans for the evening or anything. But I would appreciate it, and I know she would love it.

Aside from a brief visit to the shrine with my family in the morning, I have no plans. I paid my respects to Atobe's parents today. They aren't ready for prolonged visits yet.

I bet not. Maybe once they are, Arashi and I will go see them. I was never as close to his family as you were, but I bet they were really happy to see you.

It was very nice to see them alive and well. They will be happy to see all of Keigo's old friends, don't worry. They will be so excited to meet Arashi, was she born yet when they disappeared?

They've never met Arashi since we were living in New York at the time. But I don't doubt that they'll dote on her nearly as much as Atobe does.

She is an adorable little girl. My own parents quite enjoyed meeting her.

By the way, my parents have met Arashi. They agree she takes after you.

*laughs* Oh yeah? I'm glad they like her, she's a sweetie. But she has plenty of her mom in her, too. Like her nose and her smile.

I am sure her mother is well represented. I'm sorry if I brought up an uncomfortable topic.

Oh, no, you didn't at all. It was a pretty amicable split, and I still keep her up to date on Arashi and what she's up to. But I don't make excuses for why she's not in our lives, she can answer for that herself. But we're still friends.

Somehow I get the feeling you're curious about why we split up. Am I right?

She wasn't really ready to be a mom or settle down, the whole prospect scared her. So she took off, and surrendered all rights to Arashi, allowing me to be able to move her back here with me without a legal battle over the matter.

Ah. You must miss her.

More for Arashi's sake than my own. I mean, I really wanted to hate her when she up and abandoned us, but that won't do anyone any good. We have a child together, I can't be bitter and rude to her without setting a bad example, after all. But I also realize that what we had never would have lasted even if she had stuck around.

Me? No, of course not. I've been busy with work. No one wants to date a male kindergarten teacher.
